A major talking point emerged during the IPL 2026 clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur, as a dramatic boundary save from Naman Dhir and Tilak Varma sparked widespread debate among fans and experts alike.

Naman Dhir had a terrible mix-up with Tilak Varma

The controversy unfolded during the 14th over of RCB’s chase when Krunal Pandya attempted to accelerate against Afghan spinner AM Ghazanfar. The left-hander launched a powerful lofted shot towards the long-on boundary, seemingly destined to clear the ropes. However, Mumbai Indians fielders Naman Dhir and Tilak Varma produced an athletic effort that immediately sent the match officials upstairs for review.

Dhir sprinted across the boundary line and leapt brilliantly to flick the ball back into play just moments before colliding with Tilak Varma, who was positioned dangerously close to the advertising cushions. While the RCB batters completed two runs, the Bengaluru dugout signalled for a six, convinced that one of the fielders had made contact with the boundary rope during the save.

The third umpire then conducted a detailed review using multiple slow-motion replays. According to MCC Law 19.5, a boundary is awarded only if the fielder touching the ball is simultaneously grounded beyond the boundary rope or is in contact with another player who is touching the rope while still connected to the ball.

Replays showed that Naman Dhir had released the ball before colliding with Tilak Varma. Although Varma’s foot appeared close to or in contact with the boundary cushion, there was no physical connection between the two fielders at the exact instant Dhir touched the ball. As a result, the chain of contact required for a boundary violation was deemed broken.

After careful examination, the third umpire ruled the save legal, meaning only two runs were awarded to RCB instead of six. The decision proved crucial during a tense middle-over phase, with every run carrying significant importance in the chase.

Despite confusion among supporters on social media, the ruling aligned perfectly with the latest ICC playing conditions and relay-fielding laws. Mumbai Indians’ exceptional awareness near the ropes ultimately prevented four valuable runs and highlighted the razor-thin margins that often define high-pressure IPL encounters.
