Former Indian women’s cricket team head coach WV Raman recently shared a harrowing near-death experience on X, detailing how a mild allergic reaction escalated into a life-threatening situation. What began as a routine visit to his general practitioner for a viral infection turned into a dramatic medical emergency.

“Last Tuesday, I consulted my GP for a viral infection and was prescribed medicines. After taking them with food, I noticed hives spreading across my body within two hours. I called my doctor, who advised me to go to the hospital for an injection to treat what seemed like a typical allergic reaction. Though I considered delaying, I felt a surge of blood in my face, which seemed odd, so I drove to the hospital,” Raman recounted.

He described the 3-kilometer drive to the hospital as deeply uncomfortable. Along the way, he began experiencing chest congestion. Despite receiving treatment at the hospital, his condition rapidly deteriorated.

“I told the doctor I was feeling worse despite the treatment. Within seconds, things spiraled, and I found myself in an embrace with death for about 45-60 seconds. I blacked out and then regained consciousness minutes later. A seemingly mild allergy had culminated in an anaphylactic shock!” Raman wrote.

Thankfully, the 59-year-old has since fully recovered. He even resumed his commentary duties for the India-Ireland women’s ODI series in Rajkot just a day after the incident. “Kudos to the doctors at KL Hospital in Chennai for keeping their nerve and pulling me out of the jaws of death. I traveled the very next day and did the India-Ireland series,” he added.

Raman urged everyone to take allergic reactions seriously and share known allergies with family, friends, and healthcare providers. “Life deals unexpected cards. Read the signs your body gives you, and don’t ignore them. Yes, luck and God’s grace matter, but being informed and proactive is equally important,” he concluded.
