India took firm control of the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Colombo, and Yashasvi Jaiswal made an immediate impact in the field with a stunning slip catch on Day 2. The Indian opener, who has been in the spotlight following his heated exchange with Asitha Fernando, produced a moment of brilliance to dismiss Sri Lanka opener Lahiru Udara.
India entered the second Test with a 1-0 lead in the two-match series after securing a convincing 165-run victory in Galle. The visitors strengthened their position in Colombo after posting 503/9 declared, with Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel scoring impressive centuries.
The breakthrough came in the second over of Sri Lanka’s innings. Prasidh Krishna bowled to Lahiru Udara, who edged the delivery towards the slip cordon. Jaiswal reacted quickly, diving sharply to his left and completing an excellent low catch. The dismissal ended Udara’s stay at the crease after just six deliveries. The Sri Lankan opener managed only one run, leaving the hosts in early trouble as India’s seamers immediately put pressure on the top order.

Udara appeared frustrated after his dismissal, with concerns over the available light becoming a talking point. The conditions in Colombo had turned gloomy, but the umpires decided that play could continue. Sri Lanka subsequently lost another wicket shortly after the opener’s departure.

The hosts began their innings after India declared on 503/9. Dhruv Jurel remained unbeaten on 115, while Padikkal’s 117 had earlier provided India with another crucial century. The strong batting effort put Sri Lanka under immense pressure from the outset.
Sri Lanka were reduced to 8/2 within just three overs, leaving India in complete control. Following Udara’s dismissal, the hosts promoted Prabath Jayasuriya as a nightwatchman in an attempt to survive the remaining overs of the day.

However, Jayasuriya could not withstand India’s bowling attack for long. Manav Suthar dismissed the spinner on the final ball of Day 2, leaving Sri Lanka in further trouble. Jayasuriya appeared visibly frustrated as he walked back towards the dressing room and threw his gloves away.
With India’s bowlers striking regularly and Sri Lanka struggling under difficult conditions, the visitors finished the day in a commanding position. Jaiswal’s spectacular catch added another highlight to an already dominant day for Shubman Gill’s team.
