Yuvraj Singh, the legendary Indian cricketer and current T20 World Cup 2024 ambassador, has thrown his weight behind his former teammate Rohit Sharma to lead India to a historic win at the upcoming tournament. Yuvraj, who himself played a pivotal role in India’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2007, believes Rohit’s experience and leadership qualities make him the ideal captain for the challenge.

Promoting the T20 World Cup in the USA, Yuvraj spoke to the ICC about the importance of strong leadership for the Indian team. “Very crucial,” he said about Rohit’s presence. “I think we need a really good captain, a sensible captain who takes decisions well under pressure. And he’s the one to take them.”

Yuvraj highlighted Rohit’s experience as captain, referencing both his stint leading Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles and his role in the 2023 ODI World Cup where India finished runners-up. “He was the captain when we lost in the (Cricket World Cup) 50-over final. He has won five IPL trophies as a captain. I think we need somebody like him to captain India,” Yuvraj Singh asserted.

The camaraderie between Yuvraj and Rohit goes back a long way. They were teammates in the victorious 2007 T20 World Cup squad and shared the dressing room for many years. Notably, Yuvraj played his final IPL season under Rohit’s captaincy at Mumbai Indians in 2019.

Speaking about Rohit’s personality, Yuvraj Singh showered him with praise. “Very poor English,” he joked, referring to Rohit’s lighter side. “Very funny guy. From the streets of Borivali (in Mumbai), we always tease him. But a great guy at heart.”

Yuvraj particularly admires Rohit’s ability to stay grounded despite his immense cricketing achievements. “The more success he’s had, he has never changed as a person. That’s the beauty of Rohit Sharma. Fun-loving, always having fun with the guys, A great leader on the park and one of my closest friends from cricket,” he said.
