Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal believes Virat Kohli’s wicket was the turning point of the second ODI between the hosts England and the visitors India at Lord’s (London) on Saturday.

With the help of Joe Root’s (113) brilliant century knock and skipper Eoin Morgan (53) and David Willey’s (50) important half-century knocks, England managed to put 322/7 on the board. In reply, the Indian team was bundled out for just 236 runs where Suresh Raina scored the highest runs of 46 runs.

Chahal claimed that the pitch was not much spin friendly in the first innings, but the English spinners got turns in the second innings of the match.

Talking about the pitch, Chahal commented, “I think as a team, we conceded 20-25 runs too many at the death. But the credit should go to Willey and Root too because they batted so well in the end. It was a different, slow pitch. If you bowled slow, the batsmen were able to play it easily. When we bowled, there wasn’t as much turn as there was in the second innings.”

Talking about his bowling strategy in the game, where he had a figure of 10-0-43-1, Chahal said that he found it was a slow wicket.

Chahal said on his bowling strategy, “When I bowled a couple of overs, I found it to be a bit slow. So I decided to vary my pace on it and keep bowling full because it is a slow wicket, there are more chances of going for runs with short-pitched bowling. So I wanted to keep it wicket-to-wicket because if the batsman misses, I have chances of taking wickets.”

During chasing, skipper Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina had a very important fourth-wicket partnership of 80 runs. But, once Kohli was dismissed on 45 runs, Indian team lost the next wickets in the regular intervals that secured England’s crucial victory to level the series 1-1 at the end of the second game.

Chahal also believes that the English spinners bowled well in the middle overs that created extra pressures on the Indian batsmen.

Talking about the turning points of the game, Chahal said, “I think the turning point was the wicket of Virat Kohli because a good partnership was going on. When you chase 322, you need wickets in the end. I also think their spinners bowled well.

“The way Moeen started, the boundaries weren’t coming. We could only get one or two runs and the asking rate was climbing, so there was pressure on the batsmen. You can say their spinners bowled well in the middle overs.”
