Chennai Super Kings have appointed former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their new head coach, with the 2011 World Cup winner taking over from Stephen Fleming following the conclusion of IPL 2026. Fleming’s departure brings an end to one of the longest coaching associations in IPL history. The New Zealand legend had been CSK’s head coach from 2009 to 2026 and played a key role in building the franchise into one of the league’s most successful teams.
However, CSK endured a difficult IPL 2026 campaign, finishing eighth in the points table and failing to qualify for the playoffs. The five-time IPL champions announced Zaheer’s appointment on their social media platforms.
Zaheer expressed his excitement at taking charge of a franchise with such a strong IPL legacy. The former India pacer also recalled his battles against CSK during his playing career and highlighted the atmosphere created by the team’s passionate supporters at Chepauk.

“It’s an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL. As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk make it even more special. I can’t wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history,” Zaheer Khan said.
Zaheer brings considerable IPL and coaching experience to his new role. He played 100 IPL matches for Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Delhi Capitals, taking 102 wickets at an economy rate of 7.59.

After retiring from playing, Zaheer moved into team management. He joined Mumbai Indians as Director of Cricket Operations ahead of IPL 2019 and later worked with their global development programme. He was also appointed mentor of Lucknow Super Giants for IPL 2025 before his association with the franchise ended.
CSK Managing Director KS Viswanathan welcomed Zaheer, praising his experience and contribution to the development of young fast bowlers.

“Zaheer is a world class bowler and has been a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, over the years. As a player, Zaheer was one of the key reasons for India’s success in the 2000s. He’s one of the finest cricketing brains and we look forward to having him in our family,” Kasi Viswanathan said.
