Zaheer Khan, the former Indian pace legend, continues to play a pivotal role as the mentor for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as they gear up for the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Having joined the franchise last year, Zaheer aims to guide the Rishabh Pant-led side to the playoffs after a disappointing 7th-place finish in IPL 2024.

LSG made an impressive IPL debut in 2022, securing playoff spots in their first two seasons. However, their last campaign saw a dip, and they are now looking to regain their momentum. The team enjoys substantial support at their home ground, the Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium in Lucknow. Yet, when facing teams like Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the crowd often turns into a sea of yellow, largely due to the unmatched popularity of MS Dhoni.
During a recent press conference, Zaheer Khan was asked if this trend might change in IPL 2025, especially when LSG hosts CSK on April 14. With a smile, Zaheer acknowledged the inevitable dominance of Dhoni’s fans. “As long as MS Dhoni is around, yellow will dominate all the stadiums. It should be like that. He is loved by everyone. As long as he is playing, it will be like that,” he remarked.

MS Dhoni, who has been the heart and soul of CSK, is set to lead the team again in IPL 2025, despite speculation about his retirement. CSK will kick off their campaign against the Mumbai Indians at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium on March 23.

Meanwhile, LSG faces a few hurdles with injuries to key pacers Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, and Avesh Khan, ruling them out of the initial games. However, the franchise remains optimistic, with Shardul Thakur and Shivam Mavi training with the squad as potential replacements. Zaheer Khan emphasized that the team is prepared to navigate these challenges.

“When you talk about the IPL, you know that uncertainties like these can arise. LSG’s support staff is working with the pacers accordingly, and we have plans in place for the season. We have 24 players in the squad, and we know how to win matches,” he asserted.
As LSG gears up for a fresh season, the presence of Zaheer’s experience and leadership could prove invaluable in shaping their journey.
