The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced Australia as the host of the T20 World Cup 2020, what will be the first edition which takes place after a four year gap. Also, Australia will be hosting the event for the first time since the inception of this tournament.

South Africa to Bangladesh, each country has the honor to host this event but the T20 extravaganza will reach Down Under for the first time. The venues of this tournament are expected to be announced very soon.

Australia has prior experience of hosting ICC events by successfully hosting last World Cup in 2015. Apart from that, they also host 50-over World Cup in 1992 with New Zealand being the co-host on both occasions. Aussies will be eyeing to replicate the success of 2015 by winning this event, which is yet to reach in their trophy-studded cabinet.

The last T20 World Cup was played in India, where West Indies lift the trophy for the second time after defeating England at iconic Eden Gardens in a nail-biting final.

Meanwhile, ICC chief David Richardson is looking forward to introduce more teams in this short ICC tournament. He wants to give more opportunities to associate nations to compete against cricketing powerhouse at a big stage.

“Whether we move to perhaps an increase the size of the tournament by adding one or two teams or one team to each group in that first round, I think if we can do that number one we’ll provide more opportunities to other teams but number two, if you do lose two matches you’ve still got a chance in a group of five whereas in a group of four, you’re dead and buried,” said Richardson to ESPN Cricinfo.

“That might be useful and then even maybe increasing, instead of having a Super 10 have a Super 12 maybe which will again increase the number of matches but I think it will give more opportunities for the Associate members to participate in the second round of the tournament itself.”
