Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time IPL champions, are navigating the challenge of injuries, particularly with pacers like Deepak Chahar and Matheesa Pathirana prone to fitness issues. Former cricketer Irfan Pathan speculates that CSK might be eyeing Indian pacers in the upcoming IPL auction on December 19 in Dubai.
Pathan suggests that CSK could target Harshal Patel, recently released by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). While Harshal Patel emerged as the leading wicket-taker in IPL 2021, he faced challenges in the last edition. Renowned for his prowess in death overs, the conditions at Chepauk in Chennai could favor Patel, making him a valuable addition to CSK’s bowling arsenal.

“They have a lot of fast bowlers who can get injured regularly, guys like Deepak Chahar. They keep a lot of faith in Deepak Chahar but if he is not fit and available, they can be in a mess. So what they need – maybe a guy like Harshal Patel. Bangalore is not far from there, so just get Harshal Patel with a small ride of five hours, and just get him in CSK,” remarked Irfan Pathan in a discussion with Star Sports.
CSK has changed their squad, releasing England Test skipper Ben Stokes, who opted for a break in IPL 2024. With Ambati Rayudu’s retirement, the franchise has ample funds for the auction. Their focus will likely be on acquiring an all-rounder to fill the void left by Stokes in the middle order.

Chennai-born cricketer Shahrukh Khan, released by Punjab Kings, stands as an option in this regard. Presently, Shivam Dube, Moeen Ali, and Ravindra Jadeja are the primary all-round options for CSK. Notably, CSK holds a purse of INR 31.40 crore for the auction, presenting them with a substantial opportunity to secure key players and address their squad requirements effectively.
