Mumbai Indians were handed a major injury scare during their high-voltage IPL 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings, as Mitchell Santner was forced off the field after a painful shoulder injury. The incident unfolded in the 17th over of the first innings, turning what should have been a routine breakthrough into a moment of concern for the MI camp. The drama began on the fifth ball of Jasprit Bumrah’s third over.

Kartik Sharma, one of CSK’s promising young batters, attempted to capitalise on a full toss, whipping it towards deep square leg. Positioned perfectly, Santner sprinted in and committed to a forward dive. He completed a clean catch to dismiss Sharma for 18 off 19 balls, but immediately clutched his shoulder upon landing.
The discomfort was evident, and within moments, physios rushed onto the field to assist the New Zealand spinner, who eventually had to walk off with support. Interestingly, Kartik Sharma had earlier taken on Santner, smashing two sixes off him in a brief but aggressive cameo. That made the dismissal even more crucial in the context of the innings, even though it came at a cost for Mumbai.

Mitchell Santner, despite the injury scare, had already completed his full quota of four overs. However, it wasn’t his most economical outing, as he conceded 44 runs while picking up the wicket of Sarfaraz Khan.

While Santner’s injury dominated conversations, the first innings truly belonged to Sanju Samson. Opening the batting for CSK, Samson produced a captain’s knock, registering his second century of IPL 2026. He remained unbeaten on a stunning 101 off just 54 deliveries, showcasing a perfect blend of timing and controlled aggression. His innings, decorated with ten boundaries and six towering sixes, came at an impressive strike rate of 187.04 and powered Chennai Super Kings to a formidable total of 207/6 after being put in to bat.
The pitch at Wankhede, however, wasn’t entirely straightforward. Speaking during the innings break, MI pacer Ahswani Kumar highlighted the challenges. He noted that back-of-a-length deliveries were gripping slightly, while fuller balls were easier to score off. Despite the conditions, he remained optimistic about the chase, hinting that dew could play a role later in the evening.

Ahswani Kumar himself had a decent outing, picking up two key wickets—Dewald Brevis and Jamie Overton—while maintaining a respectable economy. As the chase began, all eyes were not just on MI’s batting response, but also on the fitness update of Santner, which could have a significant impact on the Mumbai Indians’ campaign going forward.
