Mumbai Indians’ disappointing IPL 2026 campaign continued to unravel during their clash against Punjab Kings, with poor fielding once again proving costly for the five-time champions. The biggest concern for MI this season has been their inability to convert chances in the field, and Naman Dhir’s dropped catch off Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling only added to their growing list of mistakes.

The incident took place in just the second over of the Punjab Kings innings. Bumrah delivered a sharp back-of-a-length ball outside off stump, forcing Prabhsimran Singh into an uncertain shot. The ball found the outside edge and flew comfortably towards the slip cordon, but Naman Dhir failed to hold onto what appeared to be a straightforward chance.

The miss visibly frustrated Bumrah, who had created the opportunity with a quality delivery. It also gave Punjab Kings an early lifeline at a crucial stage of the match.

Dhir’s fielding struggles have become a recurring issue for the Mumbai Indians throughout IPL 2026. The young fielder has now dropped seven catches this season, the highest by any player in the tournament so far. Several of those missed chances have come in pressure situations and have directly impacted Mumbai’s performances in close matches.

The Mumbai Indians as a team have looked below their usual standards on the field this season. From dropped catches to misfields in the outfield, their lack of sharpness has repeatedly hurt them during key moments. For a side already eliminated from the playoff race, those errors have highlighted one of the biggest reasons behind their disappointing campaign.

So far, MI have dropped 11 catches in IPL 2026 and have managed just three wins from 11 matches. The combination of inconsistent batting, ineffective bowling partnerships, and poor fielding has left the franchise struggling near the bottom of the table.

With their playoff hopes already over, Mumbai Indians will now shift focus towards rebuilding for next season. Improving their fielding standards is expected to be one of the top priorities if they hope to return as serious title contenders in IPL 2027.
