The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been home to some of the finest cricketers in the world since its inception in 2008. From Brendon McCullum’s unforgettable unbeaten 158 for Kolkata Knight Riders in the tournament opener to the modern era of power-hitting and tactical brilliance, the league has consistently showcased elite talent. While batters often dominate the headlines, several bowlers have built remarkable legacies in the competition, including a number of outstanding left-arm pacers.

Former New Zealand and Mumbai Indians fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan recently weighed in on a popular debate by naming the greatest left-arm fast bowler in IPL history. During a fun “winner stays on” challenge, McClenaghan was asked to choose between a series of left-arm quicks, with the selected player moving on to face the next contender.
The challenge began with former Australian pacer Dirk Nannes, who represented both Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Daredevils. McClenaghan then moved through several notable names, including Doug Bollinger, James Faulkner, RP Singh, Ashish Nehra, Irfan Pathan, Mitchell Johnson, Zaheer Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Mustafizur Rahman, and Marco Jansen.

As the competition progressed, McClenaghan made some difficult choices. He picked Irfan Pathan over Ashish Nehra due to Pathan’s all-round abilities, before selecting Mitchell Johnson and later Zaheer Khan. However, when Mustafizur Rahman entered the conversation, McClenaghan acknowledged the Bangladesh pacer’s significant impact on the IPL, describing him as a bowler who changed the game with his unique variations.
Despite the strong competition, one name ultimately stood above the rest for the former Mumbai Indians star — Trent Boult.

McClenaghan chose his former teammate over every other left-arm pacer, including Australian World Cup-winning fast bowler Mitchell Starc. The decision reflects Boult’s remarkable consistency and longevity in the tournament.
Boult has been one of the IPL’s most reliable new-ball bowlers, renowned for his ability to swing the ball early and provide crucial breakthroughs in the powerplay. His contributions were instrumental in Mumbai Indians’ successful 2020 title-winning campaign, where he formed one of the most feared pace attacks in the league.

Although IPL 2026 has not been Boult’s most productive season, with the veteran struggling to generate his trademark swing consistently, his overall record and impact across multiple franchises remain difficult to match.
For McClenaghan, the debate ended with a clear winner. After comparing generations of left-arm fast bowlers, he crowned Trent Boult as the greatest left-arm quick the IPL has ever seen.
