Prasidh Krishna delivered a career-defining spell for Team India in the third and final ODI against Afghanistan in Chennai on Saturday, June 20. The right-arm pacer produced the first five-wicket haul of his 25-match ODI career and completely dominated the visitors’ batting unit from start to finish.

Prasidh set the tone with a sensational opening spell, removing Afghanistan’s first four batters inside the first 10 overs. He kept hitting the right lengths, extracted just enough movement, and never allowed the batters to settle. His early burst gave India complete control of the contest and put Afghanistan on the back foot almost immediately.

The 30-year-old returned later in the innings to dismiss captain Hashmatullah Shahidi, who had fought hard for a well-made 102. That wicket completed Prasidh’s five-for and underlined the quality of his performance on a challenging day. His final figures of 5/23 in 8.2 overs are now the best bowling figures by any bowler in an ODI at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. He also became the first Indian bowler to take a five-wicket haul in an ODI at the venue.

Prasidh reached his milestone with a cleverly disguised slower short ball, which Shahidi pulled straight to deep mid-wicket, where Shreyas Iyer completed the catch. It was the perfect finish to a spell that had already broken Afghanistan’s top order. The achievement was also Prasidh’s first five-wicket haul in international cricket, making the moment even more special for the India pacer.

Speaking at the mid-innings break, Prasidh admitted that the heat had taken a toll despite his excellent start. He revealed that he was tired after his opening burst, but said he was happy to contribute to the team’s effort on a hot day. His workload was spread across the innings, as he returned only in the 32nd over before claiming his final wicket in the 45th.
Prasidh Krishna’s brilliant spell helped India bundle Afghanistan out for 218 and move closer to a 3-0 series whitewash.
