India openers Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan played a crucial role in their team’s 14-run victory over the West Indies in the third T20I at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday. The duo stitched together a century partnership that helped India post an imposing total of 223 runs, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

Beyond their on-field performances, Abhishek and Ishan share a strong bond built through their association in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where they represent Sunrisers Hyderabad. Their familiarity allows them to understand each other’s game without needing extensive communication in the middle.
Speaking to reporters after India’s victory, Abhishek Sharma revealed how he tries to help Ishan settle at the crease, particularly when the wicketkeeper-batter faces pressure during his initial deliveries. “First of all, Ishan doesn’t laugh that easily when he comes out to bat. So, I have to make him laugh and help him relax a little, because he likes to stay in his zone when he comes out to bat,” Abhishek said.

He also highlighted the understanding they have developed through their previous partnerships in the IPL. “But I feel like we have a really good bond. We’ve had partnerships together, even in the IPL, so we understand each other pretty well,” the left-hander added.

Abhishek led the charge with an explosive 69 off just 30 deliveries, striking six fours and five sixes. Ishan complemented his teammate with a quickfire 37 off 18 balls, helping India build momentum after an early setback.

Abhishek explained that he tries to ease the pressure on Ishan when he comes in at No. 3, allowing him to play his natural attacking game. Their shared experience means they rarely need to discuss conditions or tactics while batting together. India eventually restricted the West Indies to 209/7, securing a 14-run victory and taking a 2-1 lead in the series. The fourth T20I is scheduled for Hyderabad on October 14.
