Kolkata Knight Riders head into their IPL 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium still searching for their first win of the season. With pressure mounting ahead of the April 14 encounter, former India opener Aakash Chopra has highlighted key concerns around injuries, team balance, and tactical decisions that continue to trouble the franchise.

One of the biggest talking points remains Matheesha Pathirana’s unavailability. Despite receiving a fitness clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket, the Sri Lankan pacer will not feature in this crucial fixture. Pathirana, who was signed for a hefty ₹18 crore at the mini-auction, was expected to bolster KKR’s pace attack, but his absence has only added to the team’s ongoing struggles.

Chopra also provided an update on Varun Chakaravarthy, who has resumed bowling in the nets but is still recovering from a reported hairline fracture. While his hand remains bandaged, there is cautious optimism around his return. Chopra suggested that if deemed fit, the mystery spinner could slot straight back into the playing XI, potentially replacing Anukul Roy.

“Pathirana is fit but not available. He has got the fitness certificate, but is unavailable for this match. It would have been great had he played, especially against Chennai, but KKR’s problems are not ending,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

He further added, “Varun has started bowling, which is good news, but his hand is still bandaged. If he is available, you might see him playing in place of Anukul Roy.”

Beyond injuries, Chopra also turned his focus to KKR’s batting approach, particularly the underutilisation of Cameron Green. The Australian all-rounder has struggled for consistency this season, scoring just 56 runs in four matches. Chopra believes a change in batting position could unlock his potential.

“You are paying Cameron Green nearly ₹2 crore per match, so make him bat higher. Try him at No. 3 because you’re not using Sunil Narine there. He needs more time at the crease,” Aakash Chopra explained.

With both team selection and strategy under scrutiny, KKR face a defining test against CSK as they look to finally get their IPL 2026 campaign off the mark.
