Lucknow Super Giants continued the growing IPL 2026 trend of unique paper-note celebrations as young pacer Akash Singh grabbed attention with a fiery spell against Chennai Super Kings on Thursday night in Lucknow. The left-arm pacer delivered one of the biggest early breakthroughs of the match by dismissing CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad during the powerplay in the 59th match of IPL 2026 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium.

Gaikwad looked in positive touch during his brief stay but was sent back for 13 off just nine deliveries after falling into Akash Singh’s cleverly set trap. The dismissal came on the fifth ball of the fourth over when the LSG pacer bowled a sharp back-of-a-length delivery outside off stump.

Known for his elegant strokeplay and technical strength, Gaikwad attempted an aggressive pull shot in the fast-paced T20 format but failed to middle the ball properly. The mistimed shot went straight towards mid-on, where Nicholas Pooran completed a comfortable catch.

What followed immediately grabbed social media attention. Akash Singh pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket and celebrated the wicket in dramatic fashion, continuing a trend that has become increasingly popular during IPL 2026. Earlier this season, players like Urvil Patel and Raghu Sharma had also produced paper-note celebrations after important wickets and performances.

Akash Singh’s impact, however, extended far beyond just one wicket. The young fast bowler maintained relentless pressure and quickly removed dangerous batters, including Sanju Samson and Urvil Patel, in quick succession, putting Chennai Super Kings under severe pressure during the powerplay overs.

The performance became even more special considering Akash’s history with the Chennai Super Kings. The Rajasthan-born pacer previously represented CSK during IPL 2023 after initially starting his IPL career with the Rajasthan Royals. During his stint with Chennai, Akash played six matches and picked up five wickets.

Ahead of IPL 2024, Lucknow Super Giants secured his services, and the ongoing season now marks his second year with the franchise. Speaking at the toss, LSG captain Rishabh Pant confirmed that the team had made multiple changes to the playing XI, including handing Akash Singh his first opportunity of IPL 2026.

“We are a team, we run on trust, and that is something we are looking forward to. Akash is playing today and he’s getting his first chance of the season,” Pant said before the match. Akash Singh certainly made the most of that opportunity with a sensational spell that could become one of the defining moments of his IPL 2026 campaign.
