Hampshire signed Ashutosh Sharma with the expectation that he would provide explosive finishing power in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup. The Indian batter built his reputation in the IPL as a fearless match-winner capable of turning games around in the closing overs. However, just two matches into his stint in England, it is his bowling—not his batting—that has become the biggest talking point.

Ashutosh has endured a disappointing start with the bat, scoring just 10 runs against Yorkshire before being dismissed for a duck against Middlesex. While his primary role in the squad has yet to produce results, the 27-year-old has surprised everyone by emerging as Hampshire’s most effective wicket-taking option.

Before arriving in England, Ashutosh had bowled only 22 overs in List A cricket and taken just two wickets. Although he managed only 10 runs with the bat, he produced an outstanding bowling spell of 3/48 from nine overs, helping Hampshire defend 320/8 and register a convincing 50-run victory. His wickets included Sam Whiteman, Dom Bess and Harry Duke, showcasing his ability to break key partnerships at crucial moments.

Ashutosh followed that performance with an even better display against Middlesex despite Hampshire suffering a crushing 160-run defeat. The Indian all-rounder failed to open his batting account, but he once again stood out with the ball, registering career-best List A figures of 4/54 in nine overs. He dismissed Nathan Fernandes, Joe Cracknell, Zafar Gohar and Jack Nelson, keeping Hampshire in the contest despite the batting collapse.

The numbers underline just how remarkable Ashutosh’s transformation has been. Signed primarily for his power-hitting, he has managed only 10 runs in two innings but has already picked up seven wickets in the competition. Remarkably, that tally is more than three times the two wickets he had claimed across his entire List A career before joining Hampshire.
