The Ashes may be gone for England, but Alastair Cook finally proved that the same cannot be said of his Test career just yet as he produced a timely hundred at the MCG that evoked memories of his dominant 2010-11 tour of Australia.
Cook came unbeaten after batting two sessions in the Test and lanky fast bowler Stuart Broad urged him to bat as long as possible to take England into a secure place.
“He’s always been a very tough character, mentally strong guy and he was always going to come good at some stage. I think Cookie has always had these periods in his career where he might not score the runs he wants but then he gets a really big score,” said Broad.
“He’s someone who doesn’t just deal in little hundreds, he just seems to go big and as part of the bowling unit I would like him to do the same tomorrow.”
After missing out in first three Ashes Tests, Cook hit hard at MCG after celebrating his 33rd birthday on Christmas. He is batting on 104 and skipper Joe Root is giving him company on the other hand with 49 runs under his belt. Earlier, Australia was dismissed on 327 against a fueled up Broad, who took a four-fer.
