Chennai Super Kings (CSK) could part ways with one of their most expensive uncapped acquisitions ahead of the IPL 2027 season following a disappointing campaign. The five-time champions spent a massive ₹14.2 crore at last year’s mini auction to secure the services of young all-rounders Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma.

However, according to a report by Cricbuzz, CSK are considering releasing left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder Prashant Veer after his underwhelming debut season in the IPL.
The 20-year-old represents Uttar Pradesh in domestic cricket and has shown considerable potential in the shortest format. In 15 T20 matches, he has scored 202 runs at a strike rate of 150.74 and picked up 12 wickets at an economy rate of 6.81.

However, his performances for CSK in IPL 2026 were not particularly impressive. Veer managed just 90 runs in six innings, with his highest score of 43 coming against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). With the ball, he bowled only two overs without picking up a wicket.
Despite his struggles in the IPL, Veer had an impressive domestic season in 2025. He was named the Emerging Player of the Season in the Uttar Pradesh T20 League after scoring 320 runs at an average of 64 and a strike rate above 155. He also claimed eight wickets at an economy rate of 6.69.

Interestingly, the youngster idolises former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh and was nicknamed ‘Miller’ by one of his coaches because of his resemblance to South African star David Miller’s batting style.
Meanwhile, Kartik Sharma enjoyed a comparatively better debut season, scoring 295 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 136.57. The wicketkeeper-batter registered two half-centuries, including a top score of 71 against Lucknow Super Giants. However, Cricbuzz reported that CSK are yet to make a final decision regarding their retention and release plans. All 10 franchises must submit their retention lists by November 15.

Releasing Veer could provide CSK with additional funds ahead of the mini auction, which is expected to take place on December 16 in Goa. The franchise could also consider buying him back at a lower price while benefiting from the additional Rs 5 crore increase in the annual salary cap.
