Former South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn has opened the door to a potential coaching role with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) after the franchise parted ways with long-time head coach Stephen Fleming following the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Fleming had been at the helm of CSK since 2009 and played a central role in the franchise’s success over the years.
However, the five-time IPL champions endured another disappointing campaign in 2026, finishing eighth in the league table and missing the playoffs for a third consecutive season. With CSK now searching for Fleming’s successor, Steyn was asked on X whether he would consider the opportunity if the franchise approached him. The former South Africa pacer responded positively, suggesting that he would be open to discussing the role.
Steyn has already built a strong coaching profile since retiring from international cricket. He worked as a pace-bowling coach with Sunrisers Hyderabad between 2022 and 2024 and has subsequently taken up coaching roles with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 and Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket.

His experience as an international fast bowler could make him an attractive candidate, particularly if CSK want to strengthen their bowling resources and develop younger pacers. However, the franchise is also expected to consider candidates with extensive leadership and tactical experience.

One name already backed for the CSK head coach position is former England captain Eoin Morgan. Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes Morgan could be an ideal replacement for Fleming because of his World Cup-winning leadership experience and understanding of franchise cricket.
Ashwin suggested that CSK should consider offering Morgan a four-year contract if they decide to appoint him. According to the former India spinner, giving Morgan a long-term mandate would allow him enough time to rebuild the team and establish a new direction following the upcoming mega auction.
Ashwin also highlighted Morgan’s ability to work effectively with analysts and make tactical decisions. The former England captain has experience of leading in the IPL and guided England to their maiden ODI World Cup title in 2019.

CSK’s decision will be closely watched as the franchise looks to rebuild after several inconsistent seasons. The team has struggled to maintain the dominance it displayed earlier in the IPL, despite winning the title as recently as 2023.
In IPL 2026, the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side managed six victories from 14 league matches, once again falling short of the playoffs. The result ultimately brought Fleming’s long tenure to an end. With Dale Steyn now indicating that he would consider a CSK approach and Ashwin backing Eoin Morgan, the franchise has multiple potential options as it begins the search for a new head coach. The eventual appointment could play a crucial role in determining CSK’s next phase.
