Dewald Brevis might have missed out on a well-deserved half-century, but the young South African certainly left a strong impression on Chennai Super Kings fans with a spirited knock in his debut match. Making his first appearance for CSK in their clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 25 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Brevis brought a breath of fresh air to a struggling batting line-up.

Walking in at a precarious moment, Brevis faced immense pressure as CSK had already lost three wickets inside the powerplay. Mohammed Shami set the tone early by dismissing Shaik Rasheed on the very first delivery of the match, and Harshal Patel soon sent back Sam Curran for 9. Pat Cummins continued the damage, removing Ayush Mhatre for 30 and reducing the Super Kings to 47 for 3 by the end of the sixth over.

Partnering with Ravindra Jadeja, Brevis showed maturity beyond his years. Although Jadeja departed for 21 off Kamindu Mendis, Brevis remained composed and played with positive intent. His stroke play was crisp, and he punished the loose deliveries with confidence, particularly targeting Mendis in the 12th over where he smashed three sixes.

One of those sixes was vintage Brevis—a no-look maximum that sent the crowd into a frenzy. He danced down the track to a tossed-up delivery on leg stump, cleared long-on effortlessly, and turned heads with his signature style—keeping his head down, not even bothering to watch the ball sail over the ropes.

Unfortunately, Brevis’ promising knock ended at 42 off just 25 balls, courtesy of a brilliant catch by Mendis. His innings included one boundary and four sixes, injecting momentum into CSK’s innings, albeit briefly.

After his dismissal, CSK’s batting crumbled once again, and the team was eventually bowled out for 154 in the 20th over. At the time of writing, Deepak Hooda and Khaleel Ahmed were the last pair at the crease, trying to salvage something from a collapse that followed Brevis’ exit.
