Finn Allen delivered an innings for the ages as the New Zealand opener shattered T20 records with a breathtaking knock of 151 off just 51 balls in the 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC) season opener. Representing the San Francisco Unicorns, Allen’s innings wasn’t just explosive—it was historic, breaking Chris Gayle’s long-standing record for the most sixes in a T20 innings.

The third edition of MLC kicked off at the Oakland Coliseum, with the Unicorns taking on defending champions Washington Freedom. Asked to bat first, Allen went into overdrive after the early dismissal of his opening partner Tim Seifert.

He reached his fifty in just 20 deliveries, followed by a century in 34 balls. But he wasn’t done yet—he went on to bring up the fastest 150 in men’s T20 cricket in only 49 balls. In his blistering stay at the crease, Allen cleared the boundary a staggering 19 times, surpassing the previous record of 18 sixes jointly held by Chris Gayle (BPL 2017) and Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan (2024).

His attempt at a 20th six saw him dismissed in the 18th over, but the damage was done. Thanks to his fireworks and crucial cameos from Sanjay Krishnamurthi (36 off 20) and Hassan Khan (38* off 18), the Unicorns posted a mammoth 269/5—the highest total in MLC history and one of the biggest in global T20 franchise cricket.

Washington Freedom began their daunting chase in style with Mitchell Owen (39 off 20) and Rachin Ravindra (42 off 17) adding 89 in the powerplay. But the pressure of the massive target proved too much, as Washington slumped to 113/6 by the ninth over, needing an improbable 157 from the remaining 66 balls.
