Former Sri Lankan attacking opening batsman Sanath Jayasuriya was the hero of Sri Lanka’s only World Cup victory in 1996 as he won the Player of the Tournament award for his all-rounder performances. Apart from that, his presence provided numerous achievements for his nation in international cricket.

Jayasuriya retired from the international cricket after an ODI match against the hosts England at Kennington Oval (London) on June 28, 2011 (first ODI of the five-match ODI series). It was his only ODI since the December 2009 and in that game, Jayasuriya picked up only one wicket (1/46) and scored only two runs. Against the 232-run target in 32 overs, Sri Lanka was bowled out for just 121 runs and England won by 110 runs through the D/L method.

In his long international career, Jayasuriya played 110 Tests, 445 ODIs and 31T20Is where he scored 6,973 runs (average 40.07), 13,430 runs (average 32.36) and 629 runs (average 23.29) respectively and also took 98 wickets (average 34.34), 323 wickets (average 36.75) and 19 wickets (average 24.00) respectively.
