The 15-member India squad has been announced on Monday. With much surprise, Dinesh Karthik found a place in the squad whereas everyone was hoping for a selection of Rishabh Pant. However, the day will be special for him as he got selected after many odds. He got his selection news from his father-in-law over the phone when he was having lunch with his wife Dipika Pallikal and the CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders, Venky Mysore on Monday.

Dinesh Karthik couldn’t find his name in the squad during the last tour against Australia at home. Rishabh Pant replaced him in that series. However, Karthik had the last laugh on Monday as the chief selector MSK Prasad said Karthik has been selected as the backup wicketkeeper in the squad. According to a Times of India report, Dinesh Karthik jumped in joy after hearing the news.

After 2007, this is the second time he has been selected in the squad. India were knocked out of the tournament in the group stage in 2007. As per the news of Times of India, Karthik shared his gratitude for the selection.

“It is a special occasion. I am really lucky and grateful,” said Karthik.

However, Dinesh Karthik said that he can play any role. Even he is ready to be the finisher for the team in the tournament. He further mentioned himself as “small first-aid kit” while talking about his selection.

“Look, as far as MS Dhoni is concerned, I am just that small first-aid kit that will travel with the team. If he (Dhoni) gets injured then I will be the band-aid for a day. I am, however, aware that I can bat at No. 4 or be the finisher if given an opportunity. Post-IPL, I will prepare every day knowing and believing that I can deliver purely as a batsman as I have performed that role earlier,” he further said.
