While the Indian men’s cricket team has secured the five-match ODI series against the hosts New Zealand on Monday (28 January) with two ODIs are yet to be played, the Indian women’s cricket team has secured the three-match ODI series against the hosts New Zealand women on Tuesday (29 January) after the end of the second ODI of the series.
Leading the series by 1-0, India women’s captain Mithali Raj decided to bowl first after winning the toss in the second ODI of the series at Bay Oval (Mount Maunganui). Indian women’s bowlers dominated in the entire first innings as they bundled out the hosts for just 161 runs in 44.2 overs. While the skipper Amy Satterthwaite scored 71 off 87 balls, the second highest scorer in that innings was Leigh Kasperek (21 runs).

Among the Indian bowlers, Jhulan Goswami (3/23) bagged three wickets while Ekta Bisht (2/14), Deepti Sharma (2/51) and Poonam Yadav (2/38) claimed two wickets each and Shikha Pandey (1/19) claimed another wicket.
In reply, India women lost their top two wickets inside the first five overs of the innings as the opener Jemimah Rodriguez (0) and the no.3 batsman Deepti Sharma (8) were dismissed cheaply.

After that, another in-form opener Smriti Mandhana and the skipper Mithali Raj took the charge in that innings and guided the team for a brilliant victory to secure the series. Mandhana and Raj had the 151 runs unbeaten partnership for the third wicket where the last-match centurion Mandhana once again played the match-winning knock of unbeaten 90 runs off 83 balls (13 fours and only six). The skipper Mithali Raj also remained not out at the end on 63 off 111 balls (4 fours and 2 sixes).
Among the Kiwi bowlers, only Lea Tahuhu (1/16) and Anna Peterson (1/26) picked up one wicket each.
