On Saturday night, Delhi Daredevils (DD) suffered a 7-wicket defeat (with the only ball to remaining) against the hosts Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium (Uppal, Hyderabad).

Delhi captain Shreyas Iyer decided to bat first after winning the toss. Despite the good start, DD managed to put 163/5 on the board at the end of 20 overs. The hosts SRH chased down the target in 19.5 overs after losing only 3 wickets.

Now, we will briefly talk about some important reasons for DD’s defeat in this game.

Poor middle-order batting

While DD had a good start after opener Glenn Maxwell’s (2 runs) early dismissal, middle-order batsmen failed to utilise that. Opener Prithvi Shaw and no.3 skipper batsman Shreyas Iyer put an important 86 runs partnership for the second wicket which provided a good base in that innings.

However, their middle innings ran slower as that suffered till the end despite Vijay Shankar once again played a firing knock of unbeaten 23 runs off just 13 balls.

Failed to take successive wickets

DD bowlers failed to take the successive wickets during the SRH innings as the hosts build up good partnerships regularly to secure a victory. Out of the four partnerships in SRH innings, three were 30+ while each SRH batsman crossed the 20-run mark in that innings.

Poor fielding efforts

Glenn Maxwell dropped a chance

DD fielders had the very poor day on the field. Apart from leaking some important runs, Delhi fielders dropped two chances in the important times.

While Glenn Maxwell dropped the opener Alex Hales’ chance in the second over of the innings, Vijay Shankar put down a chance of new batsman Yusuf Pathan in the 18th over.

Trent Boult 19th over

SRH needed 28 runs for victory in the last two overs when the in-form left-arm pacer Trent Boult came to bowl his final over in this game. However, he was mostly off the line in that over as he conceded important 14 runs including one wide and two boundaries (one four and one six).

It was very important over of the game where Boult conceded important 14 runs. The most importantly, he failed to bowl in the good line & length and in result he was hugely punished for that. In the last over, SRH needed another 14 runs which Daniel Christian failed to defend.
