IPL 2018: Umpires To use New Signal For Strategic Time-out

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) conducted a two-day workshop of Indian Premier League (IPL) umpires and match referees, in order to accustom them with a new signal for strategic time-out sessions. Instead of the earlier signal of showing ‘T’ with help of both the hands that are going to clash with decision review system (DRS), the umpires will now be showing their wristwatch area with raised hands to indicate to the teams for time-out sessions.

Similar to the previous editions of the IPL, the time-out session will last for two-and-a-half minutes for each team in the innings. The bowling team can ask for a break between the sixth and ninth overs while the batting team has the option of taking a strategic break anytime between 13 and 16 overs. Altogether, there are four time-outs in an IPL T20 game.

According to the Sources of TOI, around 15 Indian umpires, along with four referees, attended the workshop. Right from Javagal Srinath, Manu Nayyar, ICC umpires coach Dennis Burns, Anil Chaudhary, Nandan, C Shamshuddin and Nitin Menon discussed on handling match issues and new changes on the block. The Indian umpires were also given training on how to handle DRS.

On Wednesday, Talking about the same, one of the sources of TOI said, “Because it is happening for the first time in IPL, the Indian umpires are also given an introductory course. Although most of the umpires are aware of DRS, but this workshop is to ensure that the umpires are up for it.”

During the last day of the workshop i.e., Wednesday, the details of DRS will be discussed in detail.
