Even though Kohli has won several big titles internationally, including the 50-over World Cup in 2011 and a Test series in Australia more recently, he is yet to touch the coveted IPL trophy despite leading RCB for a while now. Gambhir took the opportunity to take a dig at Kohli saying he is lucky that the franchise is trusting him despite the dry run.

Citing the testimonies of Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, who have won three IPL titles, Gambhir termed Virat’s captaincy as ingenuous.

Kohli, though, is not too much concerned about the fact that he is yet to win a trophy in the IPL as the captain. He has been with the RCB since the very beginning and took over the captaincy in 2013. He saw his team reaching the final in 2016 but lost to SRH by a narrow margin of eight runs.

Last year, the RCB finished sixth. Under Kohli’s leadership, they have won 44 out of 96 games and lost 48 with a success percentage of 45.83.

During the pre-match press conference on Friday, Virat said, “Obviously, you want to win the IPL. I don’t care whether I am going to be judged on this [not winning IPL] or not. I try to perform wherever I can and try to win all the possible titles, but sometimes it just doesn’t happen. We have to be practical about why we haven’t won one. That boils down to bad decision-making in pressure situations.”

The RCB skipper also said that if he thought about people from outside, he can’t even sustain five matches and remain sitting at home. Virat elaborated,

“I know people talk about it a lot and they like to grab opportunities to talk about these things. But I have a responsibility here and given a chance, as a captain, I would love to win the IPL Trophy for my team.”
