As the much-anticipated five-Test series between India and England approaches, legendary England pacer James Anderson has stirred excitement with his latest prediction. The series kicks off at Headingley, Leeds, from June 20–24, followed by matches at Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval. This marks the beginning of the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle for both teams.

What makes this series even more intriguing is the changing guard in Indian cricket. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli bidding farewell to Test cricket last month, the responsibility now falls on the shoulders of a younger crop of players. Leading the side is 25-year-old Shubman Gill, embarking on his first assignment as full-time Test captain. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been named his deputy.

Despite the absence of two modern greats, James Anderson believes the Indian team remains formidable. Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, he said, “India are in a bit of transition, but they’ve still got a very strong squad with some exciting talent. This is going to be another cracking Test series, no different from what we’ve seen before. England’s aggressive approach under Bazball will only make it more thrilling.”

With Rohit gone, KL Rahul is expected to return to his role as opener, while Gill is likely to bat at No. 4. A lot of eyes will be on Sai Sudharsan, the Orange Cap winner of IPL 2025. The stylish Tamil Nadu left-hander scored 759 runs in 15 matches for Gujarat Titans and is in contention for a Test debut at No. 3.

Adding further depth is Karun Nair, recalled after over eight years. The man who once smashed a triple century against England has made a compelling case with a double ton for India A against England Lions in early June. As India prepares for a new era in Test cricket, this England tour could set the tone for the future.
