Rishabh Pant once again endured a frustrating outing with the bat as Lucknow Super Giants failed to build on a flying start against Chennai Super Kings in a crucial IPL 2026 clash. Despite an explosive powerplay led by Josh Inglis, LSG’s familiar middle-order collapse returned to haunt them at a critical stage of the tournament.

Lucknow have repeatedly struggled this season to convert strong starts into match-winning totals. Whether it has been Mitchell Marsh, Ayush Badoni or Inglis, several batters have provided momentum at the top, only for the innings to unravel in the middle overs. That pattern continued once again against CSK.

The turning point came through the brilliance of Jamie Overton, who used his height and bounce effectively on the Chennai surface. Unlike the other CSK seamers, Overton consistently extracted extra lift off the pitch and troubled the batters with awkward lengths.

After dismissing Inglis on the very first ball of his over, the pressure shifted firmly onto Pant. As the set batter and team captain, Pant was expected to anchor the innings deep and guide Lucknow towards a strong finish. Instead, the left-hander threw away his wicket in disappointing fashion.

Attempting to force Overton through the off side, Pant misjudged the line completely and dragged the ball back onto his stumps with an under-edge. The dismissal left the Super Giants stunned, with Pant departing for just 15 runs at a stage where LSG needed stability more than aggression. CSK quickly tightened their grip on the game, removing three key LSG batters in rapid succession and dragging down the projected total significantly.

Meanwhile, Inglis continued to impress despite the defeat. The Australian wicketkeeper-batter, who missed the first seven matches of IPL 2026, has added fresh energy to Lucknow’s batting order since his return. Promoted to open the innings, Inglis immediately looked comfortable against both pace and spin.

In a must-win contest against Chennai, the Australian produced one of the innings of the season, hammering 85 off just 33 deliveries. He attacked the bowlers fearlessly and played innovative strokes all around the ground before eventually falling to Overton while attempting another scoop shot.

Overton cleverly altered his length and generated steep bounce, forcing Inglis into a faint edge that was safely collected behind the stumps by Sanju Samson. For Chennai Super Kings, the victory carried massive playoff significance. Having already won five of their ten matches, another crucial win strengthened their hopes of climbing back into the playoff race as the IPL 2026 league stage entered its decisive phase.
