Veteran Srilankan legend and Rajasthan Royals Director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara has come out in support of Sanju Samson’s decision for declining a single on the penultimate ball of the game which eventually cost RR the game against PBKS. Rajasthan fall short of the target set by Punjab by just four runs.
Sanju Samson looked in sublime touch in that game and almost turned the game for RR before getting caught at the boundary line in the last ball of the innings. During the course of the when RR was down by six wickets and required 5 runs off the last two deliveries, Sanju hit the ball straight down the ground and there was an easy single available then. The RR skipper then denied the single and took the onus on himself to take Rajasthan to victory which eventually backfired as he got caught at the boundary line.

Kumar Sangakkara has defended Sanju’s decision to avert a single on the second last ball of RR innings. In the post-match conference, Sangakkara seemed very pleased with Sanju’s approach in the game and said that it was some encouraging stuff from Samson to take it upon himself the duty of finishing the game.
“Sanju Samson backed himself, he nearly got the job done. He was five or six yards short of hitting the last ball for a six and sometimes when you know you’re hitting the ball well and you’re in form and you believe that you can do it, you’ve got to take that responsibility. And it was really encouraging to see Sanju do that,” Sangakkara said.

The RR director also believed that next time Sanju would surely finish the game and go those ten yards further which he missed this time.
“We can always talk about a missed single here or there but the crucial thing for me is the players’ belief in attitude and commitment and they know what their strengths are. And Sanju took it upon himself to finish that game and he just fell a few yards short. That happens, but the next time I’ll believe he’ll hit it that 10 yards further to win us the game,” Kumar added.
Rajasthan Royals are scheduled to play their next game against Delhi Capitals on 15th April in Mumbai.
