Mumbai Indians have made a timely squad adjustment by bringing in Krish Bhagat as a replacement for the injured Atharva Ankolekar, a move that could prove significant as they attempt to revive their IPL 2026 campaign. With the season slipping away, every change carries weight — and this one is clearly aimed at injecting fresh energy into the setup.

Bhagat, a 21-year-old all-rounder from Punjab, joins the franchise at his base price of ₹30 lakh. A right-arm medium pacer who can contribute handy runs down the order, he brings versatility — something Mumbai have been lacking in recent matches. His domestic record includes seven first-class appearances and nine List A games, with a notable half-century that underlines his ability to step up with the bat when needed.

Importantly, Bhagat isn’t walking into unfamiliar territory. He has been part of Mumbai Indians’ extended ecosystem over the past couple of years, featuring in trials and representing the Reliance Team in the DY Patil T20 Cup earlier this year. He also served as a support bowler during the pre-season, meaning he already understands the team environment, expectations, and roles — a factor that could help him settle quickly.

Ankolekar’s injury leaves a noticeable gap. The left-arm spinning all-rounder had built a reputation as a dependable utility player, dating back to his performances in India’s U19 setup, including the 2019 ACC U19 Asia Cup final. His absence disrupts the balance Mumbai had been trying to build.

However, Mumbai’s issues go beyond personnel. Their campaign has been defined by inconsistency, particularly in the powerplay. In four games, they have managed just three wickets in the first six overs — a concerning stat for a side known for its bowling firepower. Jasprit Bumrah has been economical but wicketless, while the supporting cast has struggled to make early breakthroughs.

The batting hasn’t offered much relief either. A cautious approach upfront has piled pressure on the middle order, leaving players like Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma with too much to recover.

Up next is a high-confidence Punjab Kings side led by Shreyas Iyer, making this clash even more challenging. For Mumbai Indians, Bhagat’s arrival might just be the spark they need to reset and push forward in IPL 2026.
