Former England captain Michael Vaughan has come out strongly in support of Ben Stokes amid growing speculation over the England skipper’s future following his recent off-field controversy. Vaughan believes removing Stokes as England’s Test captain would be a major mistake, arguing that the all-rounder has earned enough goodwill through his leadership and performances to deserve the ECB’s backing.

Stokes found himself at the centre of attention after reports emerged of an altercation involving him and fellow England pacer Gus Atkinson during a late-night outing on June 8. The incident has sparked debate across English cricket, with some questioning whether Stokes should continue as captain. However, Vaughan feels one mistake should not overshadow the remarkable impact Stokes has had on England’s red-ball revival.

Writing in his column for The Telegraph, Michael Vaughan stressed that Stokes has transformed the Test team since taking charge and deserves support rather than punishment. “Yes, Ben Stokes broke a curfew. Yes, he made a mistake. But is that a sacking offence as England’s Test captain? I do not think so,” Vaughan wrote.

The former England skipper highlighted that Stokes has played a pivotal role in rebuilding the team’s identity, helping England become one of the most entertaining and competitive sides in world cricket. Vaughan also suggested that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) must take responsibility for its decision rather than waiting for events to unfold naturally.

According to Michael Vaughan, the ECB now faces a clear choice: either stand firmly behind Stokes or make a decisive call if they believe the incident warrants stronger action. He made it clear, however, that he does not support removing Stokes from the captaincy over this matter alone.

Meanwhile, former England all-rounder Ravi Bopara has also urged caution while the investigation remains ongoing. Bopara stressed the importance of allowing the ECB to complete its inquiry before anyone rushes to conclusions.

Speaking on Sky Cricket, Ravi Bopara described Stokes as one of the most influential figures in English cricket and said fairness must remain the priority throughout the process. “I think it’s important that the right process is taken and we don’t jump to any conclusions, because that wouldn’t be fair on Ben Stokes or English cricket,” Bopara said.

As the ECB continues its investigation, the spotlight remains firmly on Stokes, but support from former England stars suggests many believe his contributions to English cricket should not be forgotten because of a single incident.
