MS Dhoni, known for his stoic demeanour on the cricket field, couldn’t hide his admiration when Matheesha Pathirana pulled off a spectacular catch to dismiss David Warner in the ongoing match between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals. In a game where DC won the toss and chose to bat first, Warner and Prithvi Shaw formed a formidable opening partnership, amassing 93 runs in under ten overs.

Warner’s dismissal came in the tenth over bowled by Mustafizur Rahman, as he attempted a reverse lap. Despite making a decent connection, Warner’s shot seemed destined to evade Pathirana stationed at short third man. However, the Sri Lankan youngster showcased extraordinary athleticism, diving full length to pluck the ball with his outstretched right hand.

The brilliance of Pathirana’s catch drew an uncommon reaction from MS Dhoni. The former CSK captain, typically reserved in his emotions, was seen smiling and clapping as he approached the youngster to acknowledge his remarkable effort.

Warner departed after scoring a brisk 52 off 35 deliveries, embellished with five boundaries and three sixes. Shaw followed suit shortly after, falling to Ravindra Jadeja after contributing 43 runs off 27 balls in his first match of IPL 2024.

At the time of writing, DC stood at 122 for 2 in the 14th over, with captain Rishabh Pant and Mitchell Marsh at the crease. The Delhi franchise is seeking its maiden victory of the season, while CSK aims to continue its winning streak with a third consecutive triumph.
