MS Dhoni has once again left fans guessing about his IPL future. Just when the cricketing world seemed to believe that IPL 2025 might be the legendary keeper-batter’s swansong, Dhoni dropped a cryptic but classic comment that has reignited speculation. At the toss before Chennai Super Kings’ clash against Punjab Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 30, the former India captain was asked if he would return next season.

With a grin and a trademark shrug, Dhoni responded, “I don’t know if I’m coming for the next game (laughs),” leaving fans at Chepauk both amused and anxious. It was a cheeky yet calculated comment—very Dhoni-like—that neither confirmed nor denied his retirement. The roar from the crowd when Danny Morrison posed the question showed how emotionally invested Chennai fans are in their beloved ‘Thala.’

Over the past few weeks, signs have pointed toward this possibly being Dhoni’s final IPL season—his Morse-code tee reading “One Last Time” and the viral video of his wife Sakshi allegedly whispering “his last game” while his parents watched from the stands. Still, Dhoni refuses to offer clarity.

Speaking about CSK’s underwhelming season, Dhoni was refreshingly candid. He admitted the team failed to make the most of their home advantage, something that’s historically been their stronghold. “Home advantage is very important, which we haven’t been able to capitalise on,” he said. The Super Kings have found themselves in unfamiliar territory, struggling for consistency and forced into making multiple changes—a stark contrast to their usual stable playing XI.

“This season we’ve made a lot of changes,” MS Dhoni explained. “The reason is simple. If most of your players are doing well, then you only tweak one or two. But that hasn’t been the case this year. It’s the first season after a fresh auction. So you have to see where a batter fits best.”

The current campaign hasn’t been kind to Dhoni personally either. Apart from captaining a struggling side, his own performances with the bat have drawn criticism. Often batting lower down the order and at times too late in the innings, Dhoni has looked uncharacteristically subdued, lacking the usual finish that once made him the most feared batter in the death overs.

As IPL 2025 progresses, one question looms large: Is this truly MS Dhoni’s final ride? For now, only he knows the answer—and he’s not telling. Until then, fans will continue to cherish every glimpse of the man who changed the face of Indian cricket.
