Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad once again endured a disappointing outing with the bat during CSK’s crucial IPL 2026 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The right-handed opener continued his inconsistent run this season as questions around his strike rate and batting intent grew even louder. After winning the toss, Gaikwad chose to bat first on a dry Chepauk surface that was expected to slow down as the match progressed and offer assistance to spinners.

Despite the decision favouring CSK’s strengths, the Chennai skipper struggled to accelerate and failed to make use of the powerplay conditions. CSK made one change to their playing XI, bringing in Akeal Hosein in place of Gurajpneet Singh. The innings started positively thanks to an aggressive cameo from Sanju Samson, who smashed 27 runs off just 13 balls before being dismissed by Pat Cummins. Young batter Urvil Patel also played a quick hand with 13 runs, but Sunrisers Hyderabad managed to strike regularly to keep Chennai under pressure.

While the top order showed attacking intent, Gaikwad struggled to break free. CSK scored 57/2 in the powerplay, but the captain failed to capitalise on the early momentum. Kartik Sharma tried to lift the scoring rate with an entertaining 32 off 19 balls and stitched together a useful partnership with Gaikwad. However, Cummins once again delivered a breakthrough by dismissing Kartik just when he looked set for a bigger contribution.

Coming into the match, Gaikwad had scored 312 runs in IPL 2026 at an average of 31.20 and a strike rate of just 123.80 — numbers that have drawn criticism throughout the season. Against SRH, the CSK skipper once again appeared uncertain whether to anchor the innings or attack aggressively.

At 97/3 in 10.4 overs, Dewald Brevis walked in to support Gaikwad. However, the Chennai captain’s innings never gained momentum. Remarkably, he failed to hit a single boundary during his 21-ball stay before eventually falling to Cummins for 15 runs, giving the SRH skipper his third wicket of the evening.

It has been a difficult IPL 2026 campaign for Gaikwad both as captain and batter, with his inability to dominate during the powerplay becoming a major concern for Chennai Super Kings.

Midway through the innings, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming defended Gaikwad’s approach and suggested the challenging surface also played a role in the slow scoring rate. “One boy bats all the way and other goes for it. Rutu knows how to handle it,” Fleming said during the broadcast.
