Nicholas Pooran and Rishabh Pant share more than just their reputation as two of the most dynamic wicketkeeper-batters in world cricket. Their bond runs deeper, stitched together by a shared trauma — surviving devastating car accidents that once threatened to end their careers before they had truly blossomed. Recently, Pooran opened up about this unique connection and how both cricketers continue to support each other through their journeys.

Pooran’s life changed in January 2015, when a horrific accident in St Mary’s, Trinidad, left him with serious injuries, confining him to a wheelchair and requiring multiple surgeries on his knees and ankle. Pant, similarly, survived a near-fatal car crash in December 2022 while travelling from Delhi to his hometown, Roorkee. Both fought their way back, defying odds and pain, to resume their careers.

“Even before the accident, Pant and I had a good relationship,” Bicholas Pooran shared in a candid conversation with PTI. “We always stay in touch, whether I am in India or he is in the Caribbean. The accidents are a tough chapter in our stories, but the beauty is that we’re still playing cricket today. We share our experiences and always try to help each other wherever we can.”

While life off the field binds them, on the field, Pooran is enjoying one of his finest IPL seasons yet. After a stellar 2024 campaign, Pooran has taken another step forward in 2025, with a significant role change — moving up to bat at No. 3 instead of the lower middle order.

“My mindset remains simple — win games whenever I get the chance,” Nicholas Pooran explained. “Batting at No. 3 gives me the opportunity to face more balls, especially during the Powerplay. It’s a different responsibility, but one I was keen to embrace.”

The West Indian star’s fearless batting has been a standout feature this season. Among the top ten run-getters, Pooran boasts a staggering strike rate of over 200 — a rarity, especially for overseas players in Indian conditions. His success, he believes, comes from reading spin well and adapting to subcontinent pitches.

“I’ve played in India for a while now, and the conditions are quite similar to the Caribbean — not too much bounce but good for batting. I’ve learned to read spinners from their hands, which makes a big difference,” Nicholas Pooran said. “Playing here is special — the fans, the energy — it gives you that extra push. Every cricketer dreams of performing well in India.”
At 29, Pooran is not just thriving — he’s inspiring.
