Punjab Kings opener Prabhsimran Singh is confident his team can finally break their playoff drought in IPL 2025, thanks to a new energy brought in by captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting. While this is the duo’s first season with the franchise, Prabhsimran has been with Punjab Kings since 2019 and feels that the team is now playing a brand of cricket unlike anything he’s experienced before.

“It’s been seven years with Punjab Kings, and they’ve backed me throughout. This year feels different—we’re playing fearless, dominating cricket,” Prabhsimran Singh shared in a Star Sports Press Room interaction. Reflecting on the rain-affected match against KKR, he remained optimistic about their playoff chances and said, “We’re still in the hunt. If we qualify, the next target is the trophy.”

The impact of Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting has clearly been significant. “Both coach and captain are extremely positive. Iyer backs his decisions fully and supports players unconditionally,” he said. Their influence has helped the team show fight in all conditions—most notably in a gritty win where they defended just 112 runs at home.

Prabhsimran, alongside Shashank Singh, was one of the two players retained by the franchise before the last mega auction. He’s now established himself as a regular opener, a far cry from the early years when he often watched games from the sidelines. A turning point in his mindset came after a conversation with none other than Sachin Tendulkar.
“Sachin sir once told me, ‘Even if you’re not playing, think about how much you can learn from where you are. Many would be satisfied just reaching here.’ That changed everything for me,” he revealed.
