India’s premier off-spinner Ravi Ashwin was appointed as the new captain of Kings XI Punjab for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The decision came as a surprise to many as KXIP had the stars like Yuvraj Singh and Aaron Finch for the job. Though they kept faith on the spinner and have chosen him as the best candidate to lead the squad.
However, being the captain Ashwin has revealed his plans and approach during the course of the tournament. Ashwin will lead any IPL team for the first time in his career having played for Chennai Super Kings and RisingPune Supergiant only as a player in the first decade of the tournament.
The biggest advantage for him at the position would be his experience of playing under MS Dhoni for India and CSK for a long time. He would be keen to prove himself as the leader of the team this year even as he will be looking to revive his white-ball future.
Ravi Ashwin, while speaking to Star Sports, clarified that he doesn’t have any set plan to lead the side but persuaded of developing an environment for each player to express themselves. He said, “There is no set plan to say that I will go like this. I have seen a lot of captains in my career and will try to take positives from them and try to upstage them. I will try to provide an environment where they can express themselves.”
Ashwin also mentioned that he has been working over bowling leg-spin for the last couple of years and now he will be trying those deliveries in the IPL as well. He concluded, “I have done changes over the years, and now I am bowling leg -spin for the last couple of years. The whole idea has come good, and it came good in Vijay Hazare. I am looking forward to taking it to the IPL as well.”
