The highly anticipated IPL 2023 final between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT) faced an unfortunate delay due to heavy rain and hailstorms in Ahmedabad on Sunday. As a result, the match has been rescheduled to the following day, leaving fans hopeful for a rain-free contest.

Rain played spoilsport in IPL 2023 final

According to weather.com, conditions are expected to be favorable for a full 40-over match between the two powerhouses. However, there might be some cloud cover in the evening, accompanied by wind speeds ranging from 10-15 km/hour. While the signs are positive, the unpredictable nature of weather leaves no guarantee that rain won’t interrupt proceedings once again at the Narendra Modi Stadium on the reserve day.

In such a scenario, let’s explore the possible scenarios:

  • If rain delays the start of the match, no overs will be lost if play resumes before 9:40 pm. Any further delay will result in a reduction of overs.
  • The revised cut-off times are as follows: 9:45 pm for a 19-over game, 10 pm for a 17-over game, and 10:30 pm for a 15-over game.
  • The final cut-off time is 12:06 am, which means that it is the latest possible time to begin a five-over-a-side match.
  • If even that is not feasible, the match will proceed to a Super Over. In that case, the outfield and pitch must be ready by 1:20 am.
  • If a Super Over is not possible, Gujarat Titans will be crowned champions as they finished ahead of Chennai Super Kings in the points table. Led by Hardik Pandya, Gujarat secured 20 points, claiming the top spot. Chennai managed 17 points during the league stage and finished second.

However, there is a possibility of rain interrupting the match midway. In such a scenario, the following outcomes are likely:

  • If rain arrives during the first innings and persists for a significant period, the overs will be reduced to accommodate both teams’ batting.
  • If the first innings is completed without interruption but rain washes out the entire second innings, Gujarat Titans will be declared the winners.
  • If the first innings is played and rain interrupts after five overs of the second innings, the Duckworth-Lewis (DL) method will come into play.
  • If the match goes to the DL rules but play is still not possible, Gujarat Titans will be crowned champions.
