Team India has been in a superior form in recent times, blowing away one team after another in the home conditions. The top-order led by Rohit Sharma has been smashing the opposition bowlers with skipper Virat Kohli as consistent as ever in the middle-order. However, India’s positive results and brilliant performances from the batsmen have given a problem of plenty for the skipper and the team management.
With T20 World Cup slated to begin in October this year, Team India will be looking to finalize their playing XI as soon as possible. But it is more difficult than it looks with the two opening slots throwing up a problem of plenty.

Asked about India’s opening conundrum after India’s 2-0 T20I series win over Sri Lanka, the veteran Indian opener, Shikhar Dhawan said: “All three players are doing very well. For Rohit, 2019 was fantastic. Rahul has also done very well in the last two-three months and he is a very good player. And now even I’m there in the picture. Well, this is not my headache. So, I’m not thinking too much about it because it’s not in my hands. I am happy that I did well in the two opportunities that I got.”

While there is little debate that vice-captain Rohit walks into one of the two openings positions in limited-overs (be it ODIs or T20Is), the second spot is a straight-up fight between Rahul and Dhawan. The swash-buckling Delhi batsman, however, feels being a left-hander augurs well for him.

Dhawan said, “Absolutely, that (left-hander) is an advantage because it disturbs bowlers’ line and length and it has its own impact. It wasn’t difficult (to come back) because I knew I was injured and out for a month. I was happy enjoying my time, doing my rehab and focused on training and got myself fitter and stronger. In the latter half, I prepared myself at the NCA, then played Ranji Trophy and did very well.”
Shikhar lavished praise on fast bowler Shardul Thakur for his batting skills as he smashed an eight-ball 22-run cameo to help India cross the 200-run mark after being sent in to bat on Friday.

The veteran further elaborated, “Yes, he (Shardul) is bowling well and the way be batted (on Friday) was amazing. It is a big benefit for us and for him. I am happy for him and the team.”
