Shubman Gill’s stellar knock was overshadowed by controversy as the Gujarat Titans skipper was left fuming after being controversially adjudged run out during the IPL 2025 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 2. The incident occurred off the final ball of the 13th over at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, leaving fans and Gill equally stunned.

Gill, who was cruising on 76 off just 38 balls, fell short at the striker’s end following a quick throw from Harshal Patel. However, what sparked the drama was the uncertainty over whether SRH wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen had legally dislodged the bails. Replays showed Klaasen collecting the ball and attempting a flick at the stumps, but it was unclear if the ball had actually hit the stumps or if his gloves had done the job.

TV umpire Michael Gough reviewed the footage from several angles, but with inconclusive evidence and visible doubt, he ultimately ruled Shubman Gill out. The decision didn’t sit well with the GT skipper. While he had remained composed during the review, Gill walked off visibly frustrated and was seen confronting the fourth umpire near the boundary, likely seeking clarity on the decision.

Until that moment, Shubman Gill had been in sublime touch, anchoring Gujarat’s innings with elegance and timing. His innings included 10 classy boundaries and two clean sixes. He brought up his fifty in just 25 balls and looked set for a century, having already stitched a 87-run stand with Sai Sudharsan and a quickfire 52-run partnership with Jos Buttler.

With 465 runs in 10 matches, Shubman Gill now sits third on the Orange Cap leaderboard, just behind teammate Sudharsan and Mumbai’s Suryakumar Yadav. Despite the contentious dismissal, Gill’s form remains a bright spot in Gujarat’s campaign as they chase a playoffs berth.
