India-Australia series is underway and this rivalry is about to wind-up in four days until the next round in Australia. But today we will take you down to the memory lane, when a nail-biting match ended in the record books of World Cup history on 9 October 1987.

This was the opening match for both teams in World Cup 1987 in Madras (now Chennai). Kapil Dev-led India asked Alan Border-led Australia to bat first. This decision backfired when Geoff Marsh notched up a ton and stretched the team total to 270. Such score at that time was considered as enough to win the match.

However, India had some other ideas from which Kangaroos were unaware. Navjot Singh Sidhu was making his ODI debut in that match and he thrashed Aussies in all parts of the park. Batting at no. 3, Sidhu made a sparkling 73 which included 5 towering sixes. But that effort was not enough to past the finishing line.

India fell short by just one run in the chase and the match resulted in the lowest winning margin in the WC history till now. But this day that year, we got a new star for team India. When he used to bat, the crowd went berserk and they started chanting “SIXER SIDHU, SIXER SIDHU”.
