Star Australian cricketers such as Steve Smith, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Alex Carey have high hopes for an Indian opener named Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is considered a potential next-generation superstar. The 22-year-old southpaw got a flying start to his international career when he began it with a breathtaking 171 on his Test debut against the West Indies in July 2023.

And then came the five-match Test series against England, which he topped with an impressive 712 runs earlier this year to make a name for himself as a potential rising star. He is the second Indian cricketer after Gavaskar to score more than 700 runs in a single Test series. His longer-format skills are not limited there; Jaiswal has even impressed in T20Is too, scoring 723 runs in 23 matches, and what a force he is turning out to be across formats.

A video uploaded by Star Sports Tamil on X featured several Australian players answering which of the Indian cricketers they think could be the next generational superstar.

Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon all have their money on Jaiswal. Jaiswal might be a generational superstar,” said Smith, as Starc added, “Jaiswal’s probably the next big superstar, I think.” Carey and Hazlewood echoed those views, with Lyon adding, “I believe Jaiswal will be the next generation superstar.”

Travis Head and Cameron Green mentioned that Shubman Gill was another bright prospect. “I think Shubman Gill has the potential to become a superstar,” stated Green. Labuschagne, Australia’s leading run-scorer in WTC history, said, “Jaiswal looks like a proper cricketer for all formats. I mean, him and Shubman are very good.”

Head added his admiration for Gill, as he said, “The way his career is going on, he’s bloody ridiculous. Some of the innings I have seen, he makes bowling look slow. Plays well off both front and back foot, plays spin well. Yeah, Shubman’s going to be an absolute freak.”

Where Shubman Gill has already made an impact, but Jaiswal waits for his debut, is against Australia in Tests and ODIs. He debuted against them in the 2020 Boxing Day Test and scored 272 runs in seven ODIs so far.
