Last year, the premier Australian pacer, Pat Cummins won received the award. But this time around, Warner beat the likes of Steve Smith and Pat Cummins to claim his third Allan Border Medal. Only Ricky Ponting (4) and Michael Clarke (4) have won it more than any other male Australian cricketer.

Meanwhile, veteran England fast bowler Stuart Broad could not resist himself from taking a cheeky dig at the Australian opener, after the latter won the Allan Border Medal. Warner who had a poor run in the Ashes series let Broad into his head as he was dismissed on seven out of ten times.

As soon as Warner won the medal, Broad took to his official Twitter handle to comment on an old tweet from England Cricket Board’s Twitter handle that had earlier posted a clip of Broad dismissing David Warner in the last Ashes series. He wrote: “Why is this suddenly getting retweeted more today?”

Warner gave an emotional speech while receiving the award as he recalled the days when he was banned from international cricket after the ball-tampering saga in 2018. After a one-year-ban, Warner had a memorable outing during the World Cup campaign as he amassed 647 runs at an impressive average of 71.88, just one run behind Indian opener Rohit Sharma.

However, his comeback to red-ball cricket was far from pleasing. He had a forgettable outing during the Ashes where he scored only 95 runs in five matches. Needless to say, he made a mind-boggling comeback at home. In six T20Is that he played against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, he recorded a mind-blowing average of 287. He hit the peak performance when he scored his first T20I century and was dismissed only once so far.
