T20 World Cup Archive: Top Five Upsets

The T20 World Cup 2021 will get underway today in Oman and the cricket fans can’t wait for it. Six editions of the tournament have takes place so far and this will be the seventh edition and the first to be played in the middle-east as Oman and UAE will host the tournament this year.

Zimbabwe pulled a big upset against Australia in the inaugural edition

There have been several upsets over the years in the T20 World Cups and we will have a look at five such upsets from the past six editions.

  1. Zimbabwe beats Australia (T20 World Cup 2007)

In the inaugural edition of the tournament, Zimbabwe did the biggest upset of that time. Australia were the world-beaters at that moment and was expected to win the tournament as well.

However, they couldn’t go past the Zimbabwe hurdle. Brendon Taylor scored a match-winning 60 runs in 45 balls to take Zimbabwe over the finish line.

Australian batsmen had a miserable outing in the first inning as lost their four top-order batsmen under fifty runs. Brad Hodge scored 35 runs in 22 balls but that only propelled Australia’s total to 138/9.

  1. Netherlands beats England (T20 World Cup 2014)

England skipper Stuart Broad bowled a good spell where he grabbed three wickets for 24 runs that the restricted Netherlands to 133 in Bangladesh.

In the second innings, Mudassar Bukhari and Logan van Beek ran through England’s famed batting lineup and dismissed them for 88 runs. Ravi Bopara was the highest scorer with 18 runs while eight batsmen failed to register a double-digit mark.
