Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the teenage batting prodigy from India’s U19 squad, continues to be the talk of the town during the ongoing England tour. In the second Youth Test against England, the young opener once again showcased glimpses of brilliance before falling prey to his own aggression. Chasing England’s first-innings total of 309, Suryavanshi got going in typical flamboyant fashion, smashing two boundaries and a six in a 14-ball 20.
But just as he looked set for a big one, he perished to Alex Green — the same bowler who had undone him in the series opener. It was déjà vu for Suryavanshi, who had fallen for 14 off 13 in the first Youth Test, also off Green.

On both occasions, the bowler tempted him with a short delivery, and Suryavanshi obliged with a hook shot — only to find a fielder waiting. While his early dismissals have denied him a long innings, his strokeplay has certainly turned heads. In contrast, India dominated the series opener with the bat.

Captain Ayush Mhatre led from the front with a superb century, ably supported by Abhigyan Kundu (90), Rahul Kumar (85), RS Ambrish (70), and Vihaan Malhotra (67), helping India post a mammoth 540 in their first innings.

Suryavanshi, however, made a strong statement in India’s second innings of the first Test, scoring a fluent 56 off 44 balls — studded with nine fours and a six — before falling to Archie Vaughan, son of former England skipper Michael Vaughan. India posted 248 in that innings, with Malhotra and Ambrish once again hitting fifties, and the match ended in a draw.
On Day 2 of the second Test, India reached 51/2 before rain forced early stumps. Skipper Mhatre remained unbeaten on 24, with Vihaan Malhotra on 6 at the other end.
