David Warner has hit back at suggestions Australia celebrated its Ashes victory too hard and is lacking motivation for the England one-day series.
Australia will be looking to bounce back from Sunday’s shock loss to England in Friday’s second ODI match at the Gabba.
The home side was humbled in Melbourne despite posting a more-than-competitive total of 8-304, with England opener Jason Roy belting a magnificent 180.
After claiming a dominant 4-nil Ashes victory, the Australian Test team celebrated at a Sydney pub where red-ball players Shaun Marsh and Jackson Bird were photographed smoking cigarettes.
Six Test players featured in the 50-over loss to England, prompting suggestions Australia was suffering an Ashes hangover.
But Warner said Australia’s celebrations were far from over-the-top and the team was desperate to win the five-match ODI series.
“As Steve (Smith, captain) said, you’ve got to celebrate your wins,” the Aussie opener said. “It was a long summer for us and to play the way we did and beat England 4-nil, everyone deserves to go out and celebrate.”
He further added “If people think it was over-the-top then that’s their own opinion. For us, you get one day to sum up (celebrate) a summer and I think we did it in the right sense. It’s irrelevant about an Ashes series (just being played). No matter what series it is, we’re up and about.”
Warner concluded while saying that they always give their 100% whenever take the field for Australia.
“We’re playing another game for Australia. It’s what we grew up wanting to do. We’re professional athletes. There is no excuse for anyone not to be up in my mind. We always put our best foot forward and give 100 percent every time we walk on the field,” he concluded.
