Dewald Brevis produced a moment of brilliance on Saturday (May 3) as he pulled off a sensational diving catch to dismiss Jacob Bethell in the high-octane clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. After winning the toss, CSK skipper MS Dhoni opted to bowl first, hoping to exploit early conditions.

But his bowlers failed to justify the decision as RCB came out all guns blazing. Jacob Bethell got off to a flyer, smashing three consecutive boundaries off Khaleel Ahmed in the very first over. The carnage continued in the third, as Bethell and Virat Kohli plundered three sixes off Khaleel, racing to 50 in no time.

CSK had an early opportunity to break the stand in the 4th over when Bethell mistimed a shot off Anshul Kamboj. The ball looped in the air, providing a catching chance. However, miscommunication between Ravindra Jadeja and Matheesha Pathirana led to a nasty collision and a dropped catch. While Jadeja appeared frustrated, Pathirana left the field briefly due to a facial blow, although he returned soon after.

Undeterred by the reprieve, Jacob Bethell continued his aggressive strokeplay and brought up his maiden IPL fifty in the 9th over with a crisp boundary. With both openers settled and RCB sitting pretty, CSK desperately needed a breakthrough — and it came via Dewald Brevis’ magic in the field.

In the 10th over, Pathirana delivered a short-of-length ball to Bethell, who went for the pull. He miscued it, and the ball ballooned towards square leg, seemingly headed for no man’s land. But Brevis sprinted in from deep and threw himself forward in a full-length dive to complete an extraordinary low catch, stunning the crowd and lifting CSK’s spirits.

Bethell walked back after an entertaining 55 off 33 balls, giving CSK a much-needed opening. At the time of writing, RCB were cruising at 122 for 2 after 12 overs, but Brevis’ effort had injected fresh energy into the CSK camp.
