Since the inception of the Indian Premier League in 2008, Chennai Super Kings have enjoyed the reassuring presence of their iconic leader, MS Dhoni. Over the years, Dhoni has played a pivotal role in shaping CSK into one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, guiding the team to five championship titles and building a legacy defined by consistency and composure under pressure.

However, as Dhoni moves deeper into the final phase of his illustrious playing career, the Chennai-based franchise has gradually begun preparing for a future without its talismanic captain. According to former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan, the upcoming IPL 2026 could potentially mark the final chapter of Dhoni’s remarkable journey in the tournament.

Speaking on JioHotstar, Irfan Pathan noted that Dhoni has carried the responsibility of leading and guiding CSK for many years. But with a new generation of players emerging, he believes the time has come for the baton to gradually pass on to younger stars within the squad.

“As soon as the IPL comes around, we start seeing Mahendra Singh Dhoni again, which means he is fully prepared for it, and he is looking very fit as well,” Irfan Pathan said. “We have seen him take responsibility for a number of years now, but I think this is the time for the baton to pass to the likes of Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube and Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is a young captain as well,” he added.

Interestingly, CSK’s long-standing strategy of prioritising experienced players appears to be evolving. The franchise has started investing more in young talent, creating a squad that blends Dhoni’s vast experience with youthful energy and fearless intent. Pathan believes this shift could make CSK’s batting lineup particularly exciting to watch in the upcoming season.

“CSK’s ideology has changed. It will be key for the youngsters to learn from MS Dhoni’s experience and for him to guide the players alongside him. It is a very exciting team on paper,” Irfan Pathan explained. “In terms of six-hitting ability and intent, I am really looking forward to seeing the fearlessness of this young CSK side,” he added.

Despite the transition, Irfan Pathan emphasised that Dhoni’s presence remains invaluable to the franchise. Even if his playing role becomes limited, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter’s influence in the dressing room could still be crucial for the team’s success. “CSK is incomplete without MS Dhoni. This season might be the last time we see him in the yellow jersey, and it’s tough to imagine CSK and the IPL without him,” Pathan said.
